The CIF Talks project was created in 2020 to provide a space within the Cultura Inglesa Festival for reflection, dialogue, and the collective production of knowledge on relevant contemporary issues. This edition features two panel discussions focused on youth, covering climate change, social media, and mental health.
PANEL 1 | 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Listening is essential: youth, mental health, and social media
The conversation is sparked by an excerpt from the show Famehungry, by Louise Orwin, presented at the festival. The performance takes place simultaneously for an in-person audience and a live TikTok audience, highlighting the attention economy and the price of being seen.
The panel proposes an act of listening: hearing from adolescents and young people before diagnosing them, listening to what clinical practice and research already record about the effects of virtuality, and listening to content creators, not just consumers.
The goal is to hold both potential and risk in the same debate, recognizing what social media opens up in terms of creativity, belonging, and collective organization, without losing sight of the toll it takes on mental health, privacy, and exposure.
