Famehungry with Louise Orwin
Combining artistic research, social experiment, and digital chaos, the award-winning Famehungry is a theatrical performance taken to the extreme. The play questions how social media is reshaping our sense of identity, work, value, and visibility; what this means for artists working outside the mainstream; and how we deal with the lingering suspicion that social media is distracting us from the apocalypse! Born out of an existential crisis Louise Orwin faced in her thirties, Famehungry began when she met a young TikToker who had 50,000 followers and performed daily for audiences larger than Louise had ever dreamed of. From this existential reflection and guided by the young woman, Louise began a deep dive into the attention economy.
Performed simultaneously in a theater and on TikTok Live, the show is broadcast live, and Louise makes a deal with the online audience: “If you help me reach 20,000 likes, I’ll do something amazing for you.” The stage becomes a space of conflict between the theater audience, the TikTok audience, and the Algorithm itself. With this piece, Louise attempts to answer a very personal question: how can performance art survive in the digital age?
As an extension of the play, Louise Orwin will also record a live podcast in front of a participatory audience on October 23rd and 27th. Check the schedule for details.
Famehungry is currently supported by Arts Council England and Here & Now.
